A Conversation with… Paul Masterson, CFO-Genesis HealthCare System

Paul, please take me back in time…How did the relationship begin with Alternate Solutions HealthCare?
We entered into a two-year ‘dating’ process to determine if they could help us, in some capacity, with our Home Care business.  During that time we explored whether we should structure a ‘Management Agreement’, a ‘Joint Venture’, or simply have Alternate Solutions serve as a ‘Consultant’ to us.  Obviously, we decided that a joint venture made the most sense.

Based on your experience, what is your perception of Alternate Solutions HealthCare?
We are very happy with the decision we made to join forces with Alternate Solutions. Prior to this partnership, we were losing $1m a year in our Home Care business. They are helping make a big turn-around. We went ‘live’ with Alternate Solutions on December 1, 2010, and so far, so good!

If you could isolate their Greatest Strength, what would you say that is?
Alternate Solutions HealthCare leverages technology very well.  They have a strong model in place that is driven off of key metrics.  This has absolutely filled the gaps that we were missing.  For example, they have billing competency with respect to homecare that we did not.  Alternate Solutions completely understands this business, and what it takes to make it a success, and its metrics based.  We have total confidence in their capabilities.

I speak for all of us when I say that we are very comfortable with the people we work with…They know their stuff, they are very approachable, and always willing to do what it takes.
